Is there any law that says you can’t be on side of the road taking photos of a fire in the woods?

Is there any laws that state you can’t be on side of the road (off way in the grass beside road) taking photos of a brush fire going on in the woods? (small brush fire)

You don’t mention where you live, so it would be difficult to tell you what laws applied.

That said, it doesn’t necessarily have to be illegal for you to take a picture of a burning fire for it to be legal for the police to do something about it. Law enforcement officials, rescue workers, etc are tasked with seeing to public order and safety. There are laws in place granting them discretionary authority to deal with the citizenry to execute their duties (otherwise it would be impossible for them to do their job), as well as laws that compel the citizenry to cooperate with their efforts.

It may not have been an illegal act to stop and snap the photograph, but I can almost guarantee it becomes one the instant a police officer tells you to clear out and you don’t do it. If nothing else, he can arrest you for interfering with an officer of the law, so long story short, if he orders you to do anything even remotely reasonable, it’s probably best to say “yes officer” and do as you’re told.

As for whether he’s allowed to yell at you while doing so, the police are generally encouraged to be polite when possible, but given the nature of their job and just how often they have to rescue people after they’ve done something really stupid, yeah… they’re sort of allowed to bark at people to get the point across. In fact, if you go to a police academy, you’ll discover not only are they allowed to do it, they’re trained to do it.

At no point is his job to get you to like him. It would probably be nice if you did, but it isn’t required. His job is to see to his duty, enforce the law, and guarantee the safety of the citizenry.

However, he shouldn’t be confiscating your camera, especially if the reason he’s doing so is because he doesn’t like that you’ve recorded him behaving badly. Chances are he won’t bother, though. Most police cruisers these days are equipped with camera systems that record any interaction the police have with the citizenry as long as they’re in range of the cruiser, and a lot of the officers themselves are miked so at least the audio is recorded if they’re not where they can be filmed. So, it would be pointless for him to take your camera to try and dispose of footage of him acting inappropriately. In all likelihood, his superiors already have a recording of the incident.
